Key Points
- • Maximum temperature alert extended to Tenerife starting August 8, 2025.
- • Gran Canaria and Tenerife under full alert; Lanzarote and Fuerteventura also in pre-alert.
- • Temperatures expected to exceed 37-39°C in Gran Canaria and Tenerife; up to 34-36°C in other islands.
- • Public urged to follow self-protection guidelines to mitigate health risks.
The Government of the Canary Islands has escalated the heatwave response, extending the maximum temperature alert to include Tenerife, effective from 08:00 on August 8, 2025. This decision comes after consulting with the State Meteorological Agency amid ongoing extreme conditions. Currently, Gran Canaria and Tenerife are under a full alert, while La Gomera, La Palma, and El Hierro maintain a pre-alert status.
Forecasts predict temperatures in Gran Canaria and Tenerife could exceed 37-39°C, with other islands like Lanzarote and Fuerteventura expected to reach highs of 34-36°C. Residents, particularly in the interior and mountainous areas, should be prepared for persistently high nighttime temperatures, possibly staying above 25-30°C.
In light of these conditions, citizens are strongly advised to adhere to self-protection measures outlined by the Directorate General of Security and Emergencies. This proactive approach is part of the Specific Emergency Plan for Adverse Meteorological Phenomena (PEFMA) aimed at minimizing health risks associated with the extreme heat.
