Castilla-La Mancha Demands Fair Regional Funding Amid Historical Underfunding

The government of Castilla-La Mancha, led by Vice President José Manuel Caballero, is set to demand fair and objective funding for the region at the upcoming Council of Fiscal and Financial Policy meeting. Caballero highlighted the persistent underfunding suffered by Castilla-La Mancha for over a decade, arguing this has contributed to increased regional debt despite responsible governance. He stressed that funding allocations should rely on objective criteria reflecting social, economic, and geographic realities, rather than the preferential treatment of certain regions, such as Catalonia.

Caballero also underscored the progress of a new regional Statute designed to empower the regional government and enhance the quality of life for the area's nearly 2.2 million residents. He expressed hope the Statute would not face significant changes during its review by Congress, emphasizing its importance for the region's governance and citizens' welfare.

The call for a new funding formula comes amid ongoing political dialogues affirming the need to address historic imbalances and promote equitable resource distribution. This approach aims to replace the current funding model, which has inadequately reflected Castilla-La Mancha's needs regardless of the ruling party, whether PSOE or PP, as noted by Caballero.
