The Gerencia de Asistencia Sanitaria del Bierzo (Gasbi) has successfully concluded five group sessions aimed at empowering type 2 diabetes patients in Bembibre as part of its 'Active Patient in Type 2 Diabetes' project. Held in the Casa de las Culturas, these sessions mark the final phase of a structured education initiative designed to enhance patients' self-management skills and confidence in dealing with their condition.

Fifteen participants engaged in discussions led by local health center nurses Fidel J. Corral and Beatriz Colinas. The sessions covered essential topics such as the role of the pancreas in diabetes management, the significance of dietary fiber, how to identify critical nutrients, effective food label reading, the benefits of physical activity, and what to do in hypoglycemic emergencies. The aim was to empower patients to take charge of their health by fostering knowledge and peer support.

This initiative is divided into three phases: the first focused on training health professionals on the project’s objectives; the second aimed to equip selected patients with the skills to become peer educators; and the final phase emphasized direct education for type 2 diabetes patients with the assistance of experienced peers. By promoting autonomy and responsibility, the program seeks to build a supportive community for individuals managing chronic diseases.

The initiative not only improves individual health outcomes but also strengthens communal ties among participants sharing similar challenges, thereby enriching their overall healthcare experience.
