  • • Culleredo has approved a change in land use for the La Cros site for a circular economy center.
  • • The project includes public cultural facilities and parking, expanding community amenities.
  • • The decision has faced opposition from Alternativa dos Veciños, who claim it could favor private interests.
  • • The PP insists on ensuring public benefits in future use agreements.

The city council of Culleredo has made significant strides toward establishing a center of excellence in circular economy at the former La Cros factory site, following a decision to reclassify the urban land use. This move was approved unanimously and is intended to transform two parcels previously designated for mixed commercial and educational purposes into public use, enhancing their potential for sociocultural, educational, and sports activities.

The parcels in question cover areas of 3,300 and 12,466 square meters. The plan includes not only the center for circular economy but also public cultural facilities and parking spaces, broadening the area's community amenities. Both the Xunta de Galicia and the Diputación de A Coruña issued favorable reports, emphasizing both legal security and the appropriateness of the use, allowing for effective implementation after the publication in official bulletins.

Despite the support from the ruling Socialist Party and the Partido Popular (PP), the decision has encountered opposition, particularly from the Alternativa dos Veciños party. They have criticized the agreement as ‘illegal,’ arguing it favors private interests over public benefit and threatens to take legal action against it.

In response to the controversy, the PP highlighted the necessity of modifying land use but insisted that future agreements must ensure public benefit. PP spokesperson Izaskun García indicated a need for transparency and fair compensation for the municipality in any agreements regarding the land, proposing a collaborative working group to discuss terms with other political parties.

The developments at La Cros reflect a growing commitment within Culleredo to foster sustainable economic initiatives while balancing community needs against emerging private interests.
