Galicia Enhances Marine Research and Blue Economy Initiatives
Galicia is bolstering its marine research and blue economy initiatives through strategic collaborations and innovative monitoring strategies.
Key Points
- • Galicia is a leader in marine research and the blue economy.
- • A meeting discussed the impact of various marine science initiatives.
- • The ThinkInAzul plan involves collaboration with seven autonomous communities.
- • An ocean observation strategy using Big Data tools has been developed.
Galicia continues to strengthen its position as a leader in marine research and the blue economy, as highlighted in a recent meeting led by Marta Villaverde, the Conselleira of the Sea. On August 5, key figures from marine research institutions, including Francisco Saborido from the Institute of Marine Research (IIM-CSIC) and Rosa Chapela from the Technological Foundation of the Sea (Cetmar), addressed the outcomes of various marine programs.
Central to the discussion was the ThinkInAzul initiative, which fosters collaboration across seven autonomous communities in Spain. Emphasizing the importance of data in advancing marine management and sustainability, the meeting unveiled an ocean observation and monitoring strategy. This strategy integrates innovative mapping technologies such as FARO and leverages Big Data platforms that handle extensive marine data, ensuring quality control and unified access. These advancements are aimed at enhancing coastal governance by responding efficiently to environmental threats and addressing the challenges posed by climate change.
Villaverde stated, "Our efforts in marine research not only focus on the local economy but also aim to set a benchmark for environmental sustainability. We are committed to improving the management of our marine resources together with our community partners." The new initiatives are expected to play a crucial role in optimizing the management of Galicia's coastal areas, paving the way for sustainable development in the region.
