The Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII) has undergone significant leadership changes as part of a restructuring aimed at improving its administration and research management. Manuel Cuenca Estrella has been appointed as the new Deputy Director of Evaluation and Promotion of Research, while Ramón Sánchez Gálvez steps in as the General Secretary, succeeding Cuenca.
The General Secretariat, under Sánchez’s leadership, is tasked with managing administration, personnel, economic oversight, and promoting public health initiatives at ISCIII. Cuenca's role will focus on overseeing the General Subdirectorate for Evaluation and Promotion of Research, which is instrumental in implementing the annual Acción Estratégica en Salud (AES). This action plan serves as the principal funding source for biomedical research within Spain, enabling the ISCIII to enhance its support for various health initiatives.
The General Subdirectorate is also responsible for extramural health sciences research, particularly translational biomedical research, and coordinates the evaluation of accredited Health Research Institutes (IIS). These changes reflect ISCIII's commitment to strengthen its research capabilities and ensure effective oversight of health research initiatives supported by the Spanish government.
