Severe December Rainstorm in Spain Causes Deaths, Missing Persons, and Widespread Flooding

Spain is facing a severe rainstorm hitting several regions including the Valencian Community, Balearic Islands, Murcia, and the Andalusian coast, according to the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET). Heavy precipitation and storms have led to over 230 liters of rainfall per square meter in parts of Valencia, causing flooding, river overflows, and red alerts that have triggered emergency protocols in affected areas.

At least one person has died, and multiple others are missing in Andalusia and Granada after being swept away by strong currents linked to the extreme weather. While a gradual improvement in weather is expected across most of the Iberian Peninsula, intense rain and storms will persist in Mediterranean areas. Meanwhile, fog and frost warnings remain in northern and central parts of Spain.

The heavy rainfall and flooding have put several regions on high alert with ongoing emergency measures. The situation remains critical in many parts of southern Spain, particularly Andalusia, due to ongoing impacts from the storm. In northern Spain, four people are reported missing following an avalanche, highlighting the wide-ranging effects of the extreme winter weather.

The AEMET has urged the public to maintain vigilance due to persistent hazards from the recent weather events, including flooding, landslides, frost, and fog. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and have activated emergency responses to assist affected communities and manage ongoing risks.

These December storms represent one of the most severe episodes of rainfall in Spain this season, severely affecting infrastructure, transportation, and safety across impacted regions.
