A severe heatwave is set to engulf Spain starting August 3, 2025, threatening temperatures that could soar between 40 and 42 degrees Celsius in many regions, especially affecting the southern half of the country. The Agencia Estatal de Meteorología (Aemet) has issued yellow alerts for ten autonomous communities, including Andalucía and Castilla y León, warning of extreme heat and correlated risks for forest fires.
In July alone, Spain recorded a staggering 1,060 heat-related fatalities, with 155 deaths reported in Valencia alone, exhibiting a significant rise from the previous year's counts. As authorities brace for the heatwave, Castilla y León declared a fire risk alert from August 4 to 8, prohibiting outdoor activities such as barbecuing and machinery use in forest areas to mitigate fire hazards.
The current wildfires pose significant threats, with active incidents reported in Ávila, Cáceres, and Pontevedra. Notably, a fire in A Cañiza, Pontevedra has burned approximately 300 hectares and is suspected to be of intentional origin. In Cáceres, the Las Hurdes fire has affected around 2,600 hectares, with 90% of its perimeter contained yet still not under control. The Defense Minister, Margarita Robles, has called for strict legal action against those responsible for intentional fires, emphasizing the need for accountability amid rising concerns.
