Key Points

  • • Inma Sanz labels the government's immigration policy as 'failed and erratic'.
  • • Closure of the Pozuelo reception center has sparked public outcry.
  • • Minister Torres defended the center's role in helping Ukrainian refugees.
  • • Sanz accuses the government of mistreating migrants after they enter the country.

Inma Sanz, Madrid's acting mayor, has publicly criticized the Spanish government's immigration policy, describing it as "failed and erratic" in light of the recent closure of the Pozuelo de Alarcón reception center. Her strong remarks were made during the announcement of the city's security plan for upcoming events, where she condemned the insinuations made by Minister Ángel Víctor Torres, who suggested that the Popular Party (PP) has issues with black minors. Sanz found it "intolerable" that the central government would deflect criticism towards the PP in such a manner.

Sanz emphasized the importance of the Pozuelo center, operational since 2022, which serves as refuge for children and mothers fleeing the war in Ukraine. She highlighted Torres’ defense of the center but also accused the government of inadequately managing border policies. Sanz remarked that once migrants enter Spain, they are treated poorly, saying they must bear the burden of being moved like "baggage and merchandise" to regional administrations for assistance.

Further stressing her point, Sanz asserted, "We will not accept a single insult or disqualification against a government that is treating these individuals improperly," revealing the high tensions surrounding immigration issues in Spain today.
