Spain's Water Reservoirs at 55% Capacity Amid Regional Variations and Conservation Measures

Spain's water reservoirs are currently at 55% capacity with regional differences, prompting government water-saving advice.

    Key details

  • • Spain's reservoirs at 55.01% capacity (30,827 hm³) on October 4, 2025
  • • A decrease of 487 hm³ (-0.87%) from the previous week
  • • Improved reservoir levels compared to October 2024 (47.92%)
  • • Regional variations in reservoir capacity with Andalucía at 44.17%, Aragón at 53.62%, Asturias at 63.38%
  • • Miteco recommends water-saving measures including low-consumption dishwashers and phosphate-free detergents

As of October 4, 2025, Spain's water reservoirs stand at 55.01% of their total capacity, holding 30,827 hm³ out of 56,041 hm³, according to the Boletín Hidrológico Peninsular. This marks a reduction of 487 hm³ from the previous week, a -0.87% decline. Despite this weekly drop, reservoir levels show improvement compared to the same period last year, which recorded 47.92% capacity (26,855 hm³).

Significant differences exist among autonomous communities: Andalucía's reservoirs hold 44.17% capacity, Aragón 53.62%, and Asturias 63.38%, among others. The distribution highlights regional disparities in water availability across Spain.

In response to the current hydrological situation, the Ministry for the Ecological Transition (Miteco) has issued water-saving recommendations. These include practical measures such as using basins for dishwashing, opting for low-consumption dishwashers that use less than 10 liters per wash, choosing phosphate-free detergents, and avoiding disposing of oil down the drain. These guidelines aim to encourage sustainable water use in households.

The capacity of reservoirs remains a critical factor in Spain's water resource management, especially amid fluctuations observed over recent weeks and compared to the previous year. The government emphasizes responsible usage to maintain and optimize these vital water reserves.
