A recent comprehensive study conducted by researchers from the University of Beijing and the Military Medical University of China reveals alarming health risks associated with irregular sleep schedules. Over a seven-year period, the study discovered that inconsistent sleep patterns can heighten the risk for **172 different diseases**. Notably, it was found that **20% of the risk** for **92 analyzed diseases** stems from these irregularities, which include frequent variations in sleep and wake times. Among the more severe health conditions associated with disrupted sleep are **liver cirrhosis**, **gangrene**, and numerous neuropsychiatric disorders, such as **major depression**.
Professor Shengfeng Wang, the principal investigator of the study, emphasized the necessity of prioritizing sleep regularity for improved health outcomes. He stated, "Our findings show that we must pay more attention to sleep regularity, not just its duration." This study also challenges the prevailing belief that excessive sleep is harmful, clarifying that maintaining a consistent sleep schedule is crucial for health rather than merely the quantity of sleep. To improve health and mitigate risks, the study recommends the establishment of regular sleep routines as essential for both physical and mental well-being.
