Spain is currently grappling with a significant heatwave affecting nearly all of its regions, with temperatures expected to soar as high as 42 degrees Celsius. The heatwave, which began on August 3, 2025, has prompted alerts in 12 autonomous communities, necessitating precautions from health authorities as the extreme heat persists at least until the following Sunday.
According to the Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET), five communities are under orange alerts indicating a high risk due to these extreme temperatures, which could exceed 40 degrees Celsius with minimum nighttime temperatures remaining above 23 degrees. The regions suffering the most intense heat include Andalucía, Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura, Galicia, and Madrid. Córdoba and Badajoz are predicted to experience the highest temperatures during this episode.
In addition to the orange alerts, seven other communities are also under yellow alerts, signaling risks associated with the high heat. Health authorities are particularly concerned for vulnerable populations, including the elderly, children, and outdoor workers, urging individuals to stay hydrated and minimize sun exposure during peak hours.
Compounding the hazards of the heatwave, AEMET has also issued yellow alerts for the Almeria coast due to potential strong winds and dangerous wave heights, which could reach up to three meters. The forecast indicates that the current high temperatures will carry through to Tuesday and Wednesday, followed by a temporary cooling period in some northern areas before another spike in temperatures occurs later in the week.
As the situation develops, authorities continue to stress the importance of taking safety measures to mitigate the effects of the heat, particularly for those most at risk.
