Murcia Launches Comprehensive 2026 Strategy to Combat Poverty and Social Exclusion

The Regional Government of Murcia has unveiled an ambitious 2026 Strategy to Combat Poverty and Social Exclusion, introducing 140 new measures alongside the existing 92. Almost 80% of these initiatives focus on prevention and social inclusion, aiming to address the rising poverty driven by inflation, high housing costs, and a 7% decline in purchasing power over the past five years. The strategy, developed in collaboration with social entities and public administrations, seeks to coordinate efforts across regional, local, and state levels to reduce poverty and social inequalities.

Key areas of action include preventing poverty, promoting social inclusion, and encouraging social integration. Sixteen specific objectives span social welfare, education, employment, housing, and health. Educational plans aim to reduce absenteeism and dropout rates while enhancing inclusive education. Social services will prioritize expedited emergency aid disbursement. Employment strategies focus on tailored training and job opportunities coordinated with local services. In housing, the plan calls for the establishment and review of available municipal housing stock. The health sector is targeted for improved coordination between health and social services to support vulnerable families.

Conchita Ruiz, Murcia's Regional Minister for Social Policy, Families, and Equality, highlighted the strategy's importance in tackling inequalities and improving public spending effectiveness. The implementation of these measures will be monitored through specific indicators to ensure their impact and effectiveness in combating poverty and social exclusion in the region.
