Spanish Opposition Highlights Widening Economic Struggles Despite Reported GDP Growth

In a Senate session held on February 24, 2026, the Popular Parliamentary Group (GPP) sharply criticized the Spanish government for celebrating GDP growth figures while many households continue to struggle financially. Senator Esther del Brío stressed that inflation and the rising cost of living are leaving the majority of families unable to make ends meet. She pointed out several critical economic issues, including the absence of the General State Budgets (PGE) and ongoing political corruption, demanding clarity from Minister Carlos Cuerpo regarding changes in national accounting and statistics.

Del Brío also raised concerns about the Minimum Vital Income (IMV), noting that it has grown to be 20% higher than Spain’s modal salary, which she suggested may disincentivize employment. Piedad Sánchez further challenged the government’s portrayal of a healthy economy by arguing that Spain’s growth is unsustainable and driven internally rather than through competitive exports. She highlighted the country’s significant trade deficit with China and warned that increasing regulations and costs are hindering small and medium-sized enterprises (PYMEs).

Adding to the criticism, Arenales Serrano condemned the growing inequality and poverty among workers, revealing that three million workers live below the poverty threshold. He accused the government of failing to address these real economic hardships and stressed the contradiction between official GDP growth celebrations and widespread financial distress across the population.
